HISTORY

A meeting on Diabetic Retinopathy and other Ocular Complications of Diabetes was organized in Coimbra, Portugal, on September 15 and 16, 1989, as a Satellite of the 25th Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). During this meeting, a need was identified for the establishment of a “Diabetic Retinopathy and other Complications of Diabetes” Group, within the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), to promote the study of diabetic complications of diabetes, standardized methodologies and create a clinical network to cooperate in clinical trials. After this meeting, it was decided to start a new subgroup of EASD on Diabetic Retinopathy and other Ocular Complications of Diabetes.

A proposal was prepared to be submitted to the EAS executive committee and a new subgroup of the EASD, initiated in Coimbra, Portugal, was later officially recognized.

Professor Eva Kohner became the first president. During the first years most members were ophthalmologists and the dominant issue was how to screen for diabetic retinopathy. After this first period the focus widened into research of the pathogenic mechanisms and development of diabetic retinopathy.
